EFFECT OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF FICUS GLUMOSA (AKWUKWU OSISI NKUME) LEAF ON MEAN PLATELET VOLUME (MPV), AND PLATELET DISTRIBUTION WIDTH (PDW) OF PLASMODIUM BERGHEI INFECTED MICE.
Abstract
Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the conventional pharmaceticual interventions to control the disease, challenges such as drug resistance and vector control still persist, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic approaches. This study investigated the effect of ethanol extract of ficus glumosa leaf on Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) of plasmodium berghei infected mice. A total of 36 mice weighing between 19g to 32g were purchased from a disease-free stock and were housed in metalic cages under standard conditions (12hr light/12hr dark) for one week of acclimatization. At the commencement of the experiment, the mice were weighed and randomly divided into six (6) groups of six (6) mice each labelled GP1, GP2, GP3, GP4, GP5 and GP6. The mice were inoculated by intraperitoneal injection with standard inoculums of Plasmodium berghei with 1x107 infected erythrocyte. Before treatment the mice were observed to produce clinical signs.
From the result, the MPV of malaria infected mice that was given only rat chow were significally lowered (7.7500 ± 0.70640) and PDW increeased (16.1333 ± 0.53166) compared to the normal healthy mice (Group 6) MPV (7.8833 ± 1.11250, PDW 15.9550 ±
0.78930). Group 4 treated under standard control has a decreased MPV of (7.7000 ± 0.0000) and significally high increased PDW of (66.0000 ± 85.7365) compared to the healthy mice (normal control). Group 3, 2, and 1 treated with high dose, medium dose and low dose of ficus glumosa leaf extract has (MPV 8.7000 ± 0.66933, PDW 16.0667 ± 0.36697), (MPV 8.3667 ± 0.97912, PDW 16.0333 ± 0.50067) and (MPV 7.9600 ± 0.75697, PDW 15.6200 ± 0.23875) respectively. Hence when compared to the healthy mice (normal control) (MPV 7.8833, PDW 15.9500), this suggest that the ficus glumosa leaf extract is of high effiecancy on the malaria infected mice treated with low dose (MPV 7.9600 ± 0.7569 and PDW 15.6200 ± 0.23875) of the extract.
