DEPOSITIONAL MODEL OF SANDSTONE DEPOSIT IN ITU/ODUKPANI OF AKWA IBOM/CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The samples collected from Itu/Odukpani of Akwa Ibom/Cross River States were invested using integrated grain size, lithofacies and Pebble morphometry analysis to determine the depositional environment. Results of grain size analysis showed standard deviation and skewness ranging between 0.7 to 1.4 and -0.13 to 1.59 respectively suggesting poorly sorted sediments which are fine skewed to strongly fine skewed. This implies river deposited sediments under high energy current. The graphic mean of the sediments falls between 0.2 to 2.5 with mean graphic mean value of 1.03, indicating mainly medium to coarse grained sediments. The lithologic units vary in thickness from thin bed to thick beds and displayed a fining upwards repetitive cyclic pattern of sedimentaion. Results from Pebble morphometry reveals flatness ratio (FR) of 0.46 to 0.5. The MPSI of the pebbles Itu/Odukpani Local government lies within the range of 0.69 to 0.71. The oblate-prolate (OP) index ranges from -0.50 to 11. The plot of MPSI vs OPI shows that the sediments were dominantly influenced by fluvial processes. The pebbles are more on the Bladed side than the oblate and prolate sides. The results shows that conglomerate of Itu/Odukpani are dominantly of fluvial origin with little shallow littoral influence.
