Abstract

ABSTRACT Induction motors draw a very high starting current when started directly on line, which can cause voltage drops, mechanical stress, and damage to motor windings. This project presents the design and construction of a three-phase star-delta starter panel for a 10HP induction motor. The system was designed using contactors, a timer, overload relays, and control switches, all interconnected to achieve an automatic transition from star connection at startup to delta connection during normal running operation. The test results showed that when the three-phase motor was started without a star-delta starter panel, the starting current was 83A, while the use of a star-delta starter reduced the starting current to 25A, demonstrating its effectiveness in minimizing high inrush current during motor startup. The project demonstrates that the star-delta starter is a cost-effective, reliable, and efficient method of controlling the starting current of medium-capacity three-phase induction motors, making it suitable for industrial and workshop applications.
