DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN RFID-BASED CASHLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM FOR CAMPUS CAB SERVICES AT EDO STATE UNIVERSITY IYAMHO
Abstract
This study addresses the challenges inherent in the current manual, cash-based transportation fare
payment system at Edo University Iyamho, which include operational inefficiencies, revenue
leakage, security risks, and a lack of transparency. These issues persist despite national efforts
towards cashless financial transactions. To overcome these limitations, the research proposes the
design, development, and deployment of an RFID-based cashless fare payment system
specifically tailored for the university's transportation needs.
The implementation of this RFID-based system is significant as it aims to increase operational
effectiveness, guarantee revenue transparency, and enhance user experience. It aligns with the
university's strategic objectives for digital innovation and smart campus development.
Furthermore, the system serves as a potential pilot project for other educational institutions in
Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa facing similar transportation challenges. By reducing cash
handling, it also supports public health guidelines, particularly post-COVID, and promotes
digital literacy. While acknowledging limitations such as reliance on mobile hotspots, local data
storage constraints, and basic security in the prototype, the system's design incorporates
scalability and future integration possibilities.
