FULAFIA SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM
Abstract
The internet has revolutionized communication, with social media platforms becoming central to
interaction, community building, and information sharing. Universities, as hubs of innovation and
collaboration, can significantly benefit from dedicated digital ecosystems that cater to the specific
needs of their academic community. This project addresses the critical communication and
information gaps within the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) by designing and
implementing FulafiaConnect, a specialized web-based social media platform. The core problem
identified is the absence of a unified digital space, leading to fragmented communication via
generic tools like WhatsApp and email, inefficient promotion of student entrepreneurship, and
difficulty in accessing verified academic information. To solve this, an Agile methodology was
adopted for iterative development, utilizing a robust tech stack of PHP, JavaScript (AJAX), and
MySQL for the backend, with a responsive frontend built on HTML and CSS. The developed
platform successfully integrates key features including user registration with matriculation number
or staff identity number verification, a social posting system, dedicated academic and social
groups, campus advertisement pages, and a real-time chat system. Results from system testing
demonstrated high performance, with an average response time of under 2 seconds and database
latency below 50ms for core operations. Initial beta testing with a sample group yielded an 85%
user satisfaction rate, validating the platform's usability and effectiveness. The significance of this
study lies in its direct contribution to enhancing the FULAFIA experience. FulafiaConnect
provides a centralized, secure, and efficient platform that fosters academic collaboration,
empowers student businesses, and strengthens community engagement. By streamlining
communication and information dissemination, this project lays a foundation for a more connected
and dynamic university environment, serving as a model for digital transformation within
academic institutions
