LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Abstract
Nigeria currently faces substantial energy supply issues which renewable energy development could address effectively because of its advantageous natural resources, although this progress has faced obstacles due to the country’s decentralised legal and institutional structures. The study aims to examine the effectiveness of the legal framework for renewable energy development in Nigeria and identifies its associated opportunities, challenges and necessary policy changes. The study employs a doctrinal research methodology, utilising both primary and secondary sources to gather relevant data. The research found that Nigeria has substantial renewable energy resources and supportive policies in place yet the legal framework lacks coherence and sees inconsistent implementation largely due to undefined law. The study recommends establishing an effective renewable energy program supported by strong institutions to ensure its success. These proposed modifications will enable the development of Nigeria’s renewable energy sector while enhancing national energy independence and economic growth.
