GLOBALIZATION AND NIGERIA’S FOREIGN POLICY : A STUDY OF GOODLUCK JONATHAN ADMINISTRATION
Abstract
The study examines the impact of globalization on Nigeria's foreign policy during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan, using the theoretical framework of Dependency Theory to explore the influence of global economic, political, and social forces on the country's international engagements. The research applies a qualitative research method, utilizing data collected through interviews with experts in Nigerian foreign policy, policymakers, and scholars. Data analysis was conducted through thematic content analysis, where patterns and trends related to economic diplomacy, regional security, and international trade were identified and discussed. The findings reveal that globalization significantly shaped Nigeria’s foreign policy by influencing its economic diplomacy, security policies, and regional relationships. Nigeria sought to integrate itself more into the global economy, forming trade agreements and engaging in multilateral diplomacy, particularly through organizations like ECOWAS and the United Nations. However, the study also found that Nigeria faced significant challenges such as fluctuating oil prices, domestic instability, and security concerns, which hindered the full realization of the benefits of globalization. The recommendations of the study highlight the need for Nigeria to prioritize economic diversification, improve security frameworks, and foster regional cooperation to maximize the benefits of globalization. The study concludes that while Nigeria made substantial efforts to benefit from globalization, addressing internal challenges and improving institutional frameworks are crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of its foreign policy in the global context.
