DEVELOPMENT OF A MEDICAL APPOINTMENT BOOKING SYSTEM USING PHP AND MYSQL
Abstract
The growing inefficiencies of traditional healthcare appointment scheduling—marked by long waiting times, administrative bottlenecks, and scheduling conflicts—necessitated the development of a digital Medical Appointment Booking System. This project aimed to design and implement a web-based system that simplifies the scheduling process for both patients and healthcare providers. The primary objectives were to create an online platform for appointment booking, enable real-time availability tracking, ensure data security, and facilitate efficient doctor-patient interactions.
The methodology adopted was Agile Software Development, which allowed iterative feedback from stakeholders throughout the development cycle. Tools such as PHP, MySQL, HTML, and CSS were employed to build the system, with key features including user registration, appointment management, automated notifications, and admin dashboards. Data was gathered through interviews, surveys, and observation of current hospital practices, while testing included unit, integration, and user acceptance tests.
Results showed a significant reduction in scheduling conflicts and administrative workload, with over 90% user satisfaction reported during testing. The system demonstrated robust performance under high-load conditions and included enhanced data security via encryption and authentication. Discussions revealed improved workflow efficiency and positive feedback from end users, especially on usability and real-time communication features.
In conclusion, the system successfully achieved its objectives, presenting a viable digital solution for healthcare appointment management. Future work is recommended in the areas of predictive analytics for demand forecasting, wearable device integration for remote monitoring, and full-scale Electronic Health Record (EHR) integration to improve continuity of care.
