HEPATORESTORATIVE AND IMMUNOMODULATORY EFFECT OF GARLIC ( ALLIUM SATIVUM) AND GARCINIA KOLA ON LIVER OF ALBINO RATS
Abstract
The therapeutic use of plants can be traced back to history as different cultures from time immemorial have been using plants and plant product for the prevention and treatment of diseases. Plants remain the basis for the development of modern drugs for the preservation of health. Garcinia kola (G. kola) is considered a “wonder plant” because every part of it has been found to be of medicinal importance. G. kola seed is used as an antipyretic agent in indigenous system of medicine. Garlic, a plant of genus Allium has long outlived its years of being used just as a food spice. The anti- fungal potency of garlic has been established given the rise in resistance for synthetic pharmaceuticals. This study aims to determine the Hepatorestorative and immunomodulatory effect of Garlic and Garcinia kola extract on liver of albino rats. Twenty Albino rats weighing 210g to 230g were separated into two groups named control and experimental were selected for the study due to their widespread use in biomedical research and their genetic stability. The two groups were separated as 5 control and 15 experimental. Experimental group was administered with Immunosuppressant drug (cyclophosphamide) 10mg/kg body weight for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks the control was sacrificed and 3 out of the 15 experimental group was sacrificed with blood sample collected, organ harvested and placed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for onward tissue processing. The remaining 12 rats for the experimental group was divided into three groups , Group A (Negative control) = 4 rats, Group B (Low dose ) = 4 rats and Group C (High Dose and Immuno restorative). This was done for a period of 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, animals were sacrificed using chloroform anesthesia upon inhalation. Blood sample was collected from the liver , placed into EDTA and then organs harvested and placed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for onward tissue processing. The mean value of the effect of cyclophosphamide administration on the body weight of the Rats is 210.0 ± 5.30 for inset weight, 202.7 ± 3.11 for weight after with a p value of 0.0001. The effect of Cyclophosphamide on Immuno- hematological parameters was significant (p 0.0001). Group A (control (42.0±1.00)), group B (400mg/kg Allium sativum -Garcinia Kola extract (45.0±1.00)) and group C (800mg/kg Allium sativum- Garcinia Kola extract (47.0±1.00)). Hematological changes were observed in group B and group C and it was statistically significant (P 0.0314 and P 0.0040). This study highlights the adverse effects of cyclophosphamide on body weight and immune function while demonstrating the potential of Allium sativum and Garcinia kola extracts to restore these parameters.
