Abstract

The rising occurrence of power disturbances has led to substantial financial losses and extensive damage to electrical equipment, especially in residential and commercial environments. Standard power protection products, such as circuit breakers and surge suppressors, give little protection in the absence of real-time monitoring. The aim of the project is to design and construct a power supply protection device. The system will be designed and constructed to detect abnormal voltage fluctuations and alert users through SMS messages. The project aim will be achieved through the following strategies; design process and simulation, microcontroller programming, hardware integration and extensive testing and calibration. These specific strategies are part of the process to enable the power supply protection system to perform its intended function correctly. The testing of the power supply protection system confirmed that it could accomplish the specified research goals. The performance of the system was estimated through critical tests: precision in voltage detection, relay switching speed, delivery of SMS notifications, and reliability of the system. The Project was based on the need to design an economical and heavy-duty power supply protection system that would detect voltage anomalies, i.e., over-voltage and under-voltage, and respond by tripping the power supply and notifying the user in real-time through SMS messages. The system was designed, constructed, and tested reasonably successfully, and it achieved all the set project objectives at the beginning of the project. The system can be improved with the addition of a standby source of power, for instance, a rechargeable battery, to provide round-the-clock monitoring and alertness in the event of a power blackout.
