Abstract

This study evaluated public library services for children and young adults in Kogi State, Nigeria, focusing on two major libraries: Stella Obasanjo Library, Lokoja, and Dr. AliyuObaje Library, Anyigba. A total of 150 respondents (70 from Lokoja and 80 from Anyigba) were selected using proportionate random sampling. The study examined users’ information needs, the available resources and services, constraints affecting usage, and proposed solutions. Findings revealed that users’ major information needs included academic support, digital resources, recreational reading, and life skills information. However, major constraints such as insufficient and outdated materials, lack of internet access, and inadequate staff support hindered library effectiveness. Respondents strongly advocated for the provision of updated books, internet services, staff training, and improved infrastructure. The study concluded that public library services in Kogi State, though valuable, are underperforming due to inadequate resources and poor service delivery. It recommends urgent investment in collections, ICT, and youth-focused programs to make public libraries more responsive to the needs of children and young adults.
