Abstract

This study examines the prevalence and effects of corruption among personnel of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in Bauchi Metropolis. Using a cross-sectional survey of 212 respondents, including customs officers, legal practitioners, and local traders, the research explores the forms, causes, and consequences of corruption within the institution. The findings reveal that corruption in the NCS has increased significantly over the past decade, with bribery, extortion, and political interference identified as the most common practices. Results further indicate that corruption reduces the effectiveness of customs operations, undermines revenue generation, and erodes public trust in the Service. Moreover, the study shows that corruption fuels smuggling and illicit trade in Bauchi State, while creating systemic inefficiencies and delays in revenue collection. It was also found that certain units within the Customs Service are more prone to corrupt practices than others, and that the culture of impunity perpetuates misconduct. The study concludes that corruption within the NCS is both systemic and deeply entrenched, posing a major threat to economic growth, trade facilitation, and national security. Recommendations include strengthening oversight mechanisms, improving remuneration and working conditions, and enhancing transparency through digital reforms and community accountability. Keywords: Corruption, Nigerian Customs Service, Bauchi, Public Trust, Bribery, Smuggling.
