EFFECT OF JOBLESSNESS ON INSECURITY IN TORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA.
Abstract
This study examined “The Effect of Joblessness on Insecurity in Toro Local Government Area.” The research was motivated by the growing concern over high unemployment and its link to rising insecurity in many parts of Nigeria, particularly at the grassroots. The objectives of the study were threefold: (i) to investigate the relationship between joblessness and the rise in criminal activities in Toro Local Government Area, (ii) to examine how unemployment contributes to youth restiveness and social instability in the area, and (iii) to identify strategies for reducing joblessness and enhancing security. The study adopted a qualitative descriptive research design, using interviews as the primary instrument of data collection. A total of 40 respondents, including unemployed youths, community leaders, security personnel, and employed residents, were purposively selected. Data were analyzed through thematic content analysis, where responses were grouped into themes and sub-themes that aligned with the research objectives.Findings revealed that unemployment is widespread in Toro and directly linked to crime such as theft, robbery, burglary, and drug abuse. Joblessness was also shown to fuel youth restiveness, political thuggery, violent protests, and recruitment into gangs and violent groups, thereby creating social instability. Although government measures such as empowerment programs and skill acquisition schemes were identified, these initiatives were largely ineffective due to poor implementation and corruption. Respondents emphasized the importance of sustainable job creation, vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and community-based approaches to addressing both unemployment and insecurity. The study concludes that tackling insecurity in Toro Local Government Area requires a holistic approach that addresses the root cause of joblessness. The research recommends sustainable employment programs, entrepreneurship promotion, youth empowerment, and stronger collaboration among government, community leaders, NGOs, and security agencies.
