Abstract

This study examined the impact of child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Nigeria, with specific attention to its prevalence, causes, and possible solutions. The study was guided by three research questions: What is the prevalence of child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area? What are the causes of child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area? And what are the possible solutions to child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area? Correspondingly, the objectives of the study were: to ascertain the prevalence of child trafficking, to identify the causes of child trafficking, and to determine possible solutions to child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area. A descriptive survey research design was employed, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to respondents across selected communities in Bauchi Local Government Area. The data were analyzed using simple percentages and interpreted in line with the research questions and objectives. The findings revealed that child trafficking is prevalent in Bauchi Local Government Area, with many children taken away from their homes under deceptive promises of better education and employment. The major causes identified include poverty, lack of parental care, illiteracy, false promises by traffickers, and weak enforcement of laws. The study also established that child trafficking thrives due to socio-economic vulnerabilities and inadequate institutional responses. Respondents suggested that effective solutions include public awareness campaigns, free and compulsory education, strict enforcement of anti-trafficking laws, economic empowerment of parents and guardians, and active community participation in monitoring and reporting trafficking activities. The study concludes that child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area is a multi-dimensional problem that requires a holistic approach combining government intervention, community involvement, legal enforcement, and socio-economic empowerment to curb the menace. Recommendations were made to strengthen anti-trafficking strategies and to promote sustainable solutions to protect children’s rights and well-being in the study area.
