Abstract

Traditional medicine continues to play a vital role in healthcare delivery in Nigeria, particularly in Bauchi Metropolis, where a significant proportion of the population depends on indigenous health practices for primary and preventive care. Despite its widespread use and cultural acceptance, the sector faces challenges due to the lack of standardized sensitization, formal regulation, and professional oversight of traditional medicine practitioners. This gap has raised serious concerns regarding the safety, efficacy, and overall public health implications of traditional medicine practices. A sample size of 384 respondents was selected through the use of simple random sampling technique. This study, therefore, examines the need for systematic sensitization and the standardization of traditional medicine within Bauchi Metropolis, Bauchi State, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive research design, data were gathered from key stakeholders, including traditional medicine practitioners, healthcare officials, and community members, through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Findings reveal that while traditional medicine remains highly accessible and culturally integrated, there is a pronounced lack of awareness among practitioners and consumers regarding safe practice standards, appropriate dosages, and possible interactions with conventional medical treatments. The study highlights the critical need for regulatory frameworks, professional training, and community-based educational programs to improve practice quality, ensure patient safety, and enhance public confidence in traditional healthcare systems. Ultimately, the research demonstrates that implementing standardized sensitization initiatives can facilitate the responsible integration of traditional medicine into the broader healthcare delivery system, promote safer health outcomes, and support sustainable healthcare development in Bauchi Metropolis.
