Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aims to determine the factors influencing the choice of delivery location (healthcare facility versus non-healthcare delivery such as TBA or home delivery) among pregnant women in Amukpe community, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprises approximately 6,500 people, with a focus on pregnant women in the community. The primary instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire, which included socio demographic information and questions related to the factors determining the choice of delivery location. The questionnaire was administered to 350 respondents, with a response rate of 95%. Findings revealed that a significant number of women preferred Traditional birth center due to financial constraints, and perceived quality of care at health facilities. Specifically, 89% of respondents acknowledged that healthcare centers provide quality care services, and 96% indicated that these centers have qualified and experienced healthcare workforce. However, 90% still reported that public health centers provide better services than traditional health services, highlighting a gap between perception and practice. Recommendations include: Increasing awareness and education about the benefits of delivering at healthcare facilities. These measures aim to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by promoting safer delivery practices among pregnant women in the community.
