THE IMPACT OF INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE ON MARITAL STABILITY AMONG COUPLES IN GIDA DUBU BAUCHI NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the impact of intimate partner violence on marital stability among couples in Gida Dubu, Bauchi, Nigeria. Intimate partner violence, a pervasive issue in many societies, has profound effects on the emotional, psychological, and physical well-being of individuals, as well as the stability of marriages. The research used survey design, employed quantitative technique in which structured question in five Likert scale was used to collect data from the respondents. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 269 out of the total population of 757 in Gida Dubu Bauchi state Nigeria. Findings reveal that Intimate Partner Violence significantly affects marital stability, leading to strained communication, loss of trust, emotional detachment, and, in many cases, separation or divorce. Women were found to experience more frequent and severe forms of violence, including physical abuse, emotional manipulation, and financial control, compared to men. The research also indicates that cultural norms, gender inequality, and economic dependence exacerbate the prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence, making it difficult for victims to leave abusive relationships. Additionally, the lack of institutional support and societal pressure to maintain marriages, even in the face of violence, further contributes to marital instability. The study concludes that Intimate Partner Violence is a major factor undermining marital stability in Gida Dubu. It recommends the implementation of community-based intervention programs, legal frameworks, and support services for victims of Intimate Partner Violence. These measures are crucial for promoting healthier, more stable marital relationships and ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals within the community.
