Abstract

ABSTRACT This project designed and fabricated a mobile hydraulic lifting machine for lifting heavy automobile engine in the workshop. The machine was fabricated using locally sourced materials for economic viability and affordability of the device. Full welding was applied to all parts so as to avoid failure of the parts during lifting operation and avert accident or injuries. The maximum design load for the machine is 500kg and the minimum force produced by the hydraulic cylinder is 22.22KN. The pressure generated by the RAM force with a piston area of 8.495 ∗ 10−3m2 was 2.616 MPa and the effort required to overcome the force produced by the cylinder was 2103 N. The maximum circumferential stress and the allowable bending stress of the cylinder were 54.413x106 Nm-2 and 108.8 MPa which are far below the AISC recommended, this showed that the beam is safe to lift the designed load of 500kg. The maximum shear force and the bending moment of the cantilever were 17222 N and 620 Nm respectively and the maximum shear stress developed at the pivot P and E were 17.54 MPa and 22.63 MPa respectively which are far below the allowable stress. This shows that the machine is safe for use. The performance evaluation of the machine showed that the number of stoke required and the time taken to reach the maximum height both at the loading and unloading operation increases with load while the lowering time decreases with increase in the load.
