Abstract

This project investigates the normal approximation of the Gamma distribution for modeling student weight data from Akwa Ibom State University. The study aims to evaluate the accuracy, validity, and limitations of the normal approximation in capturing the characteristics of weight distributions, which are typically right-skewed. Using a stratified random sample of 617 students from the Faculties of Engineering, Education, and Physical Sciences, the research applies descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including parameter estimation, goodness-of-fit tests (Chi-square), and graphical analysis. Results indicate that while the normal approximation reasonably captures the central tendency of the weight data, it fails to adequately represent the skewness and tail behavior, as confirmed by a significant departure from the Gamma distribution (p
