EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF HYDROETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF BIDEN PILOSA ON GLUTATHIONE S-TRANSFERASE (GST) LEVEL IN SUCROSE-INDUCED DIABETES MELLITUS IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of glucose, fat, and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, action, or both, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia (high blood glucose level) associated with the development of specific microvascular complications of retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. There are three types of Diabetes mellitus including Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes mellitus. Type 2 Diabetes mellitus is the most prevalent and people living with it have high risk of neuropathy, heart attack, stroke, foot ulcer and possible eventual amputation. Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit flies) has been used as a model for studying human diseases because of its genetic resemblance to humans. This study investigated the antidiabetic effect of Bidens pilosa in Drosophila melanogaster. High-calorie diet of sucrose (2.5g/10 diet) was given to D. melanogaster for ten days to induce insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes. The diabetic flies were then treated for seven days with 50mg, 100mg, 200mg and 400mg of Bidens pilosa per 10g standard diet. 0.72mg/10g diet of Metformin was used as standard drug. The glucose content of the fly homogenate was quantified using glucose oxidase. A significant decrease (p
