ESTIMATION OF THE VITAMIN CONSTITUENTS OF THE ETHANOLIC AND AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF COSTUS AFER STEM

ABSTRACT
This study is on the estimation of the vitamin constituents of the ethanolic and aqueous extract of Costus Afer stem. Costus afer stem was purchased from a bush in Ugwuaji in Enugu. The study determined some essential vitamins including Vitamin A, B1,B2,B3, Vitamin C and vitamin E . The study result showed that the value for ethanolic extract vitamin A is 0.00925mg/ml and aqueous is 0.0426mg/l, ethanolic extract Vitamin B1 is 0.336 mg/ml and aqueous is 0.325mg/l, ethanolic extract Vitamin B2 is 0.0538mg/ml and aqueous value is 0.038, ethanol extract Vitamin B3 value is 0.0.081mg/l and aqueous value is 0.0541mg/l, ethanolic extract Vitamin C value is 0.0.0123mg/ml and aqueous value is 0.008mg/l and that ethanolic extract Vitamin E value is 0.192mg/ml and aqueous value is 0.273mg/l. the study recommends that further studies should be made on the phytochemical and antimicrobial properties of Costus afer in order to diversify its use in pharmaceautical purposes.
