EFFECTIVENESS OF SLOW SAND FILTER AS A SIMPLE TECHNOLOGY IN TREATING WATER
Abstract
Slow Sand Filter this study basically focuses on the effectiveness of slow sand filter as a simple technology to treat water by households to make it portable. In course of the study, one models of SSF were constructed using the same materials in which same granular materials with different grain sizes were used. SSF has grain sizes of 19.5mm, 1.18mm and 14mm arranged from bottom to top and SSF has sizes 14mm and 2mm and 1.18mm respectively. One surface water samples were collected at location (bayangidansarki) (njiwaji) where human activities is at its peak. The water samples were put under analysis of physical parameter and coliform bacteria in which result revealed high contamination of sample. The samples were put under pre- chlorination treatment. Using alum after which boiling of samples followed, this was to reduce the level of contamination. The samples were ten successfully filtered wing both SSF in which result revealed that both samples were treated to appreciable standard considering the contamination level, however, water sample under treatment of SSF yielded better result sample SSF, with coliform bacteria levels respectively. Hence the smaller the effective grain size, the better the results obtained SSF in-indeed is a most have in households so as to reduce water contamination which leads to various water borne diseases.
