Abstract

Abstract Packaging materials play a critical role in maintaining the safety and quality of ready-to-eat foods such as cookies. However, improper handling and unhygienic storage conditions may lead to microbial contamination of these materials, posing potential public health risks. This study investigated the level of microbial contamination on packaging materials of cookies sold in stores around Gboko South, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. Samples of cookie packaging materials were aseptically collected from selected retail outlets and analyzed using standard microbiological techniques. The results revealed the presence of bacterial and fungal contaminants, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus species, and Aspergillus species. The findings suggest lapses in hygienic handling and storage practices. Regular monitoring, improved sanitation, and public awareness are recommended to reduce contamination risks and ensure consumer safety.
