INVESTIGATING THE EFFECT OF NICOTIANA TABACUM ON THE BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF AFRICA CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS) JUVENILES
Abstract
This research investigated the toxicological effects of Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) leaf extract on the biochemical parameters of juvenile Clarias gariepinus (African catfish). The study was conducted under controlled laboratory conditions where different concentrations of N. tabacum extract were introduced to determine the 96-hour LC50, evaluate water quality variations, and assess biochemical markers such as Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), and Acid Phosphatase (ACP). Results revealed significant dose-dependent mortality, behavioural changes, and enzymatic alterations, indicating hepatotoxic and systemic toxicity of tobacco exposure. These findings highlight the potential ecological hazards of tobacco waste in freshwater environments and the risks it poses to aquaculture sustainability. The study provides valuable data for environmental monitoring, aquaculture management, and policy formulation.
