Abstract

This research project delves into the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial potential of Anacardium occidentale (cashew) leaves. Fresh leaves of Anacardium occidentale were collected and subjected to phytochemical analysis, revealing the presence of tannins, while saponins, fat, and oil were notably absent. The study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of Anacardium occidentale leaf extracts against common pathogenic organisms, including E. Coli, Salmonella, and Streptococcus. The findings of this investigation showed that, under the conditions tested, the leaf extract of Anacardium occidentale did not demonstrate significant antibacterial activity against the selected pathogens. There was no observable zone of inhibition in the bacterial cultures, indicating that, as prepared and tested in this study, the extract may not be effective in inhibiting the growth of these specific pathogenic organisms. The research concludes that while this study did not find substantial antibacterial properties against the chosen pathogens, Anacardium occidentale leaves may still possess unexplored health benefits, and further research is warranted. These findings provide a foundation for future investigations into the phytochemical constituents, traditional uses, and potential health applications of Anacardium occidentale. Recommendations include further exploration of other phytochemicals, diversification of testing conditions, collaboration between researchers and traditional medicine practitioners, implementation of quality control for product development, and the importance of public awareness to inform the responsible utilization of this natural resource.
