ANTIFUNGAL PROFILES OF EXTRACTS OF VITELLARIA PARADOXA( SHE-BUTTER) BARK
Abstract
Abstract
The growing incidence of fungal infections and increasing resistance to conventional antifungal drugs have necessitated the search for alternative therapeutic agents from medicinal plants. This study evaluated the antifungal profiles of extracts of Vitellaria paradoxa (shea butter) bark against selected pathogenic fungi. The bark was collected, dried, pulverized, and extracted using aqueous and organic solvents. Antifungal activity was assessed using the agar well diffusion method, while minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using standard procedures. Results revealed that the bark extracts exhibited significant antifungal activity against the test organisms, with variations depending on extract concentration and solvent type. The findings support the ethnomedicinal use of Vitellaria paradoxa and suggest its potential as a source of novel antifungal agents.
