Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women globally and remains a major public health concern in developing countries, including Nigeria. Early detection through effective screening methods such as breast self-examination, clinical breast examination, and mammography has been shown to significantly reduce breast cancer mortality. This study assessed the awareness of breast cancer and screening among women in Offa Local Government Area, Kwara State. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to women of reproductive age within the study area. The data obtained were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics and presented in tables and percentages. Findings from the study revealed that although many women had heard about breast cancer, knowledge of risk factors, symptoms, and screening methods was inadequate. The practice of breast cancer screening among respondents was also found to be low. Factors such as lack of awareness, fear, cultural beliefs, and limited access to screening facilities were identified as major barriers to screening. The study concluded that there is a need for increased health education and awareness programmes on breast cancer and its screening methods among women in Offa Local Government Area. It therefore recommended that government, healthcare providers, and non-governmental organizations intensify community-based education and screening programmes to promote early detection and reduce breast cancer–related morbidity and mortality.
