DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF AN AUTOMATIC CHANGE OVER SWITCH WITH GENERATOR TRIP OFF AND STARTER
Abstract
Abstract
The frequent occurrence of power outages in developing countries has increased reliance on backup generators for residential, commercial, and industrial electricity supply. Manual switching between utility power and generator sources is often inconvenient, time-consuming, and prone to human error, which may damage electrical appliances and compromise safety. This study focuses on the design and construction of an automatic changeover switch equipped with generator trip-off and starter mechanisms.
The system automatically detects power failure, initiates generator startup, transfers the load to the generator, and subsequently switches back to the main supply when power is restored while shutting down the generator safely. The design integrates relays, contactors, timers, and control circuits to ensure reliability and operational efficiency. Performance testing demonstrated rapid response time, reduced power interruption, and improved safety. The study concludes that the developed system offers a cost-effective and dependable solution for uninterrupted power supply.
