Abstract

ABSTRACT This project focused on the design and implementation of an e-learning portal aimed at enhancing teaching and learning activities in the Computer Science Department of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. The study was initiated to address the limitations of traditional classroom instruction, such as limited accessibility to learning materials, inadequate student–lecturer interaction, and inefficient management of academic resources. The project adopted the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology, specifically the Waterfall Model, which provided a systematic and structured approach through the stages of requirement analysis, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance. Data for the study were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documentary reviews involving both students and lecturers. The information gathered informed the functional and non-functional requirements for the system. The e-learning portal was developed using PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and MySQL on an Apache web server environment. The system provides modules for course registration, lecture material upload/download, assignment submission, quizzes and examinations, grading, discussion forums, and feedback mechanisms. It also features an administrative dashboard for monitoring and management purposes. Testing of the system revealed that it performed efficiently, with all modules functioning as intended and offering user-friendly navigation. The results demonstrated that the developed e-learning portal significantly improved accessibility to educational resources, enhanced communication between lecturers and students, and simplified administrative tasks related to academic management. The system’s customization to local institutional needs also addressed the limitations of existing learning management systems such as Moodle and Google Classroom. In conclusion, the e-learning portal provides an effective and sustainable digital learning environment that aligns with the institution’s academic objectives and supports modern educational practices. It is recommended that the system be fully adopted, regularly maintained, and extended to other departments within the institution to promote a comprehensive digital learning culture.
