Abstract

Since time immemorial, plants have been used by humans for medicinal, therapeutic purposes. Medicinal plants contain various phytochemicals, nutrients and mineral components that is beneficial for human health. The objective of this research is to determine the phytochemical analysis, proximate and mineral composition of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx in order to ascertain its benefits on human health through consumption. The dried calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa plant were purchased at Akesan market in Oyo town of Oyo State Nigeria. The plant materials were identified at the Herbarium of University of Ibadan. The phytochemicals were extracted from the dried calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa using solvent extraction method. The qualitative phytochemical screening showed that there are some plant chemicals present in the extract such as alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids and phylate. The quantitative result revealed their presence as follows; Tannins (4.21%), saponnins (29.95%), phylate (19.50%), alkaloids (45.24%) and flavonoids (1.10%). Hibiscus sabdariffa has proximate composition of Crude protein (30.37), Crude fibre (20.36), Ash (15.29), moisture (22.50) and Crude fat (11.48). Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces contain significant nutritional benefits and can find application on various food additives. It is also capable of nurturing man with certain value of dietary nutrients.
