Abstract

Introduction Women entrepreneurship has increasingly gained attention as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth in developing economies. In Nigeria, particularly in Benue State, women are becoming active participants in commerce, agriculture, education, food processing, and service industries. This shift reflects broader socio-economic changes that emphasize empowerment, employment generation, and poverty reduction. Entrepreneurship is widely recognized as a driver of productivity, innovation, and employment, making it essential for economic dynamism at regional and national levels. Concept of Women Entrepreneurship Women entrepreneurship refers to the process whereby women initiate, organize, and manage business ventures while taking associated risks. Their participation supports economic development and social progress by expanding economic opportunities and strengthening local markets. In Benue State, the growth of women-owned enterprises has been linked to democratic reforms, increased gender awareness, and empowerment campaigns, leading to improved job creation and technological advancement. Contributions to Economic Development 1. Employment Generation Studies show that women-led enterprises significantly contribute to employment creation and financial sustainability when supported through educational and economic empowerment programmes. Additionally, rural small businesses in Benue display a strong gender presence, with women accounting for about 55% of ownership, mostly operating micro-enterprises that employ between 1–10 workers. 2. Business Performance and Economic Expansion Entrepreneurship skills—such as accounting, marketing, and interpersonal abilities—have been found to improve sales, profits, and business expansion among women enterprises in the state. 3. Poverty Reduction and Social Stability The rise of women-owned businesses has helped reduce family crises and social vices while promoting economic growth through the introduction of new products and services. 4. SME Contribution to Local Economy Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Makurdi contribute significantly to employment but require better access to capital, technical knowledge, and supportive business environments to maximize their economic impact. Challenges Limiting Their Impact Despite their potential, research indicates that women entrepreneurs in Benue State have not contributed significantly to economic growth due to operational difficulties and insufficient policy support. Major constraints include: Financial limitations affecting many enterprises High production costs Poor infrastructure Need for training and mentorship programmes These barriers restrict business scalability and reduce the overall economic benefits that could arise from stronger female participation. Strategies for Enhancing Economic Impact Scholarly recommendations emphasize: Continuous training, workshops, and managerial skill development for women entrepreneurs. Increased awareness of the economic importance of women entrepreneurship through seminars and empowerment initiatives. Policy frameworks that improve access to finance, infrastructure, and market opportunities to stimulate sustainable development. Conclusion Women entrepreneurship remains a powerful but underutilized tool for economic development in Benue State. Evidence suggests that when women are equipped with relevant skills, financial support, and enabling policies, their enterprises generate employment, enhance financial sustainability, and stimulate local economic growth. However, structural constraints continue to limit their full contribution. Strengthening institutional support and removing operational barriers will not only empower women but also accelerate the socio-economic transformation of the state.
