ROLES OF HEALTH EDUCATION IN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
Abstract
This study explores the critical role of health education in the health care system, using General Hospital Offa, Kwara State, as a case study. The primary aim was to assess the effectiveness, awareness, and impact of health education initiatives on patient health behaviors and outcomes. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 100 respondents through structured questionnaires. The findings revealed a high level of awareness (85%) and perceived usefulness (55%) of health education among patients. Health workers were identified as the major source of information, and topics such as hygiene, family planning, and HIV/AIDS awareness were most commonly addressed. The study also identified key barriers to effective health education delivery, including language differences, low literacy levels, and inadequate resources. Despite these challenges, the overall perception of health education was positive, with many respondents reporting improved personal health practices. The study concludes that health education is an indispensable tool in promoting preventive care and enhancing public health outcomes. It recommends strengthening feedback systems, training more educators, and tailoring messages in local languages to maximize impact.
