QUALITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF SPONDIAS MOMBIN FRUITS
Abstract
This study is on the qualitative phytochemical screening of ethanolic extact of Spondias mombin (Linn) fruit. The extraction was carried out at the laboratory of the department of chemistry, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Ereluoyo. The phytochemical screening was carried out at the central research laboratory, University of Lagos, Yaba, Lagos. This study is relevant because most medicinal plants are often neglected and underutilized. Also, there is threat of extinction due to lack of interest by the scientific community, decision makers and agro-industrial groups. Also, disappearance of the habitat of these medicinal plants is also a problem. The extraction was carried out using the distillation method which involve an equipment known as the hydro-distiller.The qualitative phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, and flavonoids but alkaloids and cardiac glycosides were found to be absent. This study was able to show that the fruit can be used in the ethanobotanical remedies to many human ailments such as inflammation, cancer, microbial infections and other related ailments. It is noteworthy to mention that Spondiasmombin is safe for human consumption.
