Abstract
This study was conducted to examine environmental determinants and students academic achievement in mathematics in Junior secondary schools in Calabar Municaipality of Cross River State. The study adopted the ex-post facto design. Ex-post factor design. The population of this study comprised 1875 JSS1 students drawn from sixteen (16) public Junior secondary schools in Calabar Municipality of Cross River State, Nigeria. From this number, male stood at 783 (41.87%) while female stood at 1087 (58.13%). The study adopted the stratified random sampling and simple random sampling techniques. The choice of using 10% was due to the fact that it represents one third of the population.. The instrument was a researcher’s developed instrument titled: Environmental Determinant and Students’ Academic Achievement in Mathematics Questionnaire (EDSAAMQ). To ensure the face validity of the instrument, EDSAAMQ was validated by the researcher who submitted drafted copies of the instrument the supervisors and three test experts in Educational Measurement and Evaluation in UNICROSS. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach alpha coefficient and the coefficient ranging from 0.70 to 0.77. The procedure for data analysis was descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent sample t-test). The findings revealed that: There is a significant influence of school location, school furniture and class size on academic achievement in Mathematics. It was recommended among many others that Policymakers should invest in improving school infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, to provide students with a conducive learning environment.
