NUTRITIONAL AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF NON-SWEET SPECIE OF CHRYSOPHYLLUM ALBIDUM PEEL (AFRICAN STAR APPLE)
Abstract
Nutritional and antimicrobial properties of non-sweet specie of chrysophyllum albidum peel (african star apple) were evaluated in this work. The result proximate analysis per (mg/100g) obtained ash has 4.04%, moisture 4.55%, fat 7.56%, fibre 2.78%, protein 6.8% and carbohydrate 74.27%. The phytochemical analysis shows the presence of typical plant constituents such as phenol, tannin, alkaloids, flavonoid, steroid and glycoside. The results of quantitative phytochemical analysis per (mg/100g) showed phenol has 0.654, tannin 0.553, alkaloids 0.5543, flavonoid 0.775. Steroid 0.654 and glycoside 0.765. The content of vitamin analysis per (mg/100g) in African star apple showed Vitamin A has 5.876, Vitamin B1 4.66, Vitamin B2 10.66, Vitamin B6 3.77, Vitamin C 40.64 and Vitamin B12 20.65. The mineral composition in African star apple per (mg/100g) indicated sodium has 1.92, potassium 3.23, calcium 0.78, magnesium 5.90, iron 0.32 and zinc 0.62. This study shows that Chrysophyllum albidum has great potentials as antimicrobial agents against selected pathogens and may be used as an alternative medicine in the treatment or control of enteric bacterial infections. Staphylococcus aureus showed inhibition zone of 3.00mm at 100mg/ml, 2.5mm at a concentration of 50mg/ml, 1.8mm at 25mg/ml, 1.6mm at concentration of 12.5mg/ml and 1.5mm at 6.25mg/ml. The zone of inhibition in E. coli recorded 3mm at a concentration of 100mg/ml, 2.3mm at 50mg/ml, 1.9mm at 25mg/ml, 1.5mm at 12.5mg/ml and 1.4mm at 6.25mg/ml. Chrysophyllum albidum holds great potentials as an antimicrobial agent for chemotherapeutic medicine and it is a rich source of nutrient and phytochemicals.
