PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND PROXIMATE COMPOSITION OF POLYALTHIA LONGIFOLIA LEAVES (ASHOKA LEAVES)
Abstract
Polyalthia longifolia, belongs to the family Annonaceae commonly known as the false “Ashoka tree", is a native plant to India widely recognized for its ornamental, medicinal, and environmental benefits. Its leaves have been studied for their chemical composition and potential applications in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields. The leaves of P. Longifolia was extracted using cold maceration. Phytochemicals screening of the extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins in the methanolic leaves extract whereas terpenoids was found to be absent in the extract. The proximate analysis of leaves were carried out using standard method of association of analytical chemist. The leaves contain appreciable amount of moisture 10.24 ± 0.021 g/100g, crude fibre 28.02 ± 0.424 g/100g, crude proteins 9.10 ± 0.028 g/100g and ash 8.45 ± 0.014 g/100g with low crude lipids 0.28± 0.042 g/100g and high amount of carbohydrate 43.92 ± 0.403 g/100g. Therefore, further research should be done to isolate and characterized compounds from the plant.
