THE INFLUENCE OF SARA-SUKA (THUGGERY) ACTIVITIES IN YULI GANJUWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT 2022 TO 2024
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates The Influence of Sara-Suka (Thuggery Activities) in Yuli, Ganjuwa Local Government Area from 2022 to 2024. Sara-Suka, a term locally used to describe violent youth gangs engaged in thuggery, has become a growing social menace in northern Nigeria, particularly within Bauchi State. The research aims to examine the causes, patterns, and consequences of these activities on community security, youth development, political processes, and social stability in Yuli. Using a quantitative research approach, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to residents, community leaders, and local authorities. The findings reveal that poverty, unemployment, political manipulation, drug abuse, and weak law enforcement are major drivers of Sara-Suka activities in the area. The consequences include increased insecurity, disruption of social and economic life, fear among residents, and the exploitation of youth for political violence. Moreover, the activities have hindered educational progress and youth empowerment initiatives. The study recommends the implementation of comprehensive youth empowerment programs, community policing strategies, and stricter enforcement of laws against thuggery. It also advocates for collaborative efforts between government, traditional institutions, and civil society to tackle the root causes of youth violence. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on youth violence and insecurity in northern Nigeria and provides actionable insights for policy formulation and community intervention strategies.
