THE ROLE OF RADIO IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY
Abstract
This study examines *The Role of Radio in a Democratic Society*, with a focus on Premier 93.5 FM Ibadan. Radio has long been a vital tool for mass communication, particularly in developing countries, where access to other forms of media is often limited. In a democratic society, radio serves as a platform for information dissemination, public opinion formation, civic education, and as a watchdog of government activities. This research explores how Premier 93.5 FM, a prominent radio station in Ibadan, contributes to these democratic functions by providing news, political programs, and platforms for public engagement.
Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study investigates the station’s programming, its influence on the political awareness of its listeners, and the extent to which it fosters democratic participation in Oyo State. Interviews with radio staff, content analysis of political shows, and surveys of the station's audience provide insights into how Premier FM balances entertainment with its role in fostering an informed citizenry.
The findings reveal that Premier 93.5 FM plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and civic participation. However, challenges such as government influence, commercial pressures, and limited audience reach are identified. The study concludes that while radio remains a significant medium in supporting democracy, there is a need for continuous improvement in its independence and engagement with diverse societal voices. Recommendations are made for enhancing the role of radio stations like Premier FM in sustaining democratic ideals.
