Abstract

ABSTRACT Salmonellosis is a public health problem worldwide and particularly in Africa with high disease burden. This study was aimed to isolate and characterize Salmonella species in clinical sample collected from General hospital Wushishi patients. A total of 150 clinical samples (75 Blood and 75 stool samples) were collected from 75 patients attending General hospital Wushishi, Niger State. Isolation of Salmonella species was done using Salmonella-Shigella Agar as differential media, followed by morphological and biochemical characterizations. This study shows a prevalence of 15 (20%) out of the 75 samples collected, of which the incidence was higher in male patients with 9 (60%) as compared to the female 6 (40%). patients of age 60 years and above had the least occurrence of salmonella species as compared to the rest. All Salmonella species isolated were resistance to Ampicillin, Cotrimoxazole and Cefoxitin which are common antibiotic used in the community. However, the isolates show highest susceptibility to Ofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin. The present study showed considerably high prevalence of Salmonella species in the locality patients and indicates that ciprofloxacin can be used as a first line therapy for the treatment of Salmonella gastroenteritis.
