THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF INORGANIC FERTILIZER APPLICATION ON MAIZE GROWTH AND YIELD (EVDT), A CASE STUDY MAKODA LOCAL GOVERNMENT KANO STATE
Abstract
This study assessed youth engagement in hide and skin enterprises was conducted in Kwakwatawa, Dala Local Government Area. The hide and skin sector, is a vital component of Nigeria's leather industry, offers significant employment opportunities yet youth suffers from low youth participation due to perceived unattractiveness and systemic challenges. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 150 respondents through structured questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. Findings revealed that youth participation is predominantly driven by limited access to formal employment, with most engaged in raw material collection, tanning, processing, and trading. The industry is male-dominated (80%) and composed mainly of individuals aged 18–35 years with varying educational backgrounds. Key challenges identified include lack of modern equipment, limited access to capital, health hazards, and market instability. Despite these constraints, the industry provides considerable economic benefits such as income generation, skill acquisition, and job creation. The study concluded that while the hide and skin enterprises offer viable employment for youths, several institutional and infrastructural barriers hinder their full participation. It recommends increased government and private sector intervention through provision of modern equipment, financial support, health and safety improvements, and targeted training programs. Enhancing youth engagement in this sector is critical for addressing unemployment and promoting sustainable economic development in the region Kano State.
