Abstract

A mega filling station typically refers to a large, expansive fuel station that offers a wide range of services and amenities beyond just fueling vehicles. These stations often include convenience stores, fast food restaurants, car washes, multiple fueling pumps, and sometimes even specialized services such as EV charging stations and spacious rest areas. This research aimed to design a mega filling station that integrates passive circulation design principles. The study pursued four key objectives: examine the design characteristics of a mega filing station; identify the passive circulation design principles in a mega filing station; evaluate the architectural design considerations that are used in passive circulation design principles in a mega filing station; and design a Mega Filings station that integrates passive circulation design principles. A mixed-method approach was used, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. Fifteen filling stations were randomly selected for the study. Data was gathered through observation checklists and conductive research, and analyzed using SPSS for pattern recognition and statistical trends analysis. The study revealed that 60% of the filling stations employed between five and eight passive circulation design principles, while the remaining 40% used fewer than six. Common strategies included orientation of Buildings and Pump Islands (73.3%), clear entry and exit path (50%), use of Passive Surveillance (66.7%), clear Sight and Transparent Layout (60%), and one-way Circulation Loops (65%). Less common were two-way circulation loops (20%), and the use of different surface materials (10%). The study concludes that passive circulation design principles in filling stations are insufficient. The study emphasized passive circulation design strategies to aid traffic flow in a mega filling station and proposed a design model that incorporates these solutions comprehensively. The prototype design was developed using AutoCAD 23 (2D), Revit 2023 (3D), and SketchUp-Pro 22 with Lumion 12.01 for rendering and animation. Emphasis was placed on inculcating calculated vehicular turning radius, parking spaces for non-fuel customers, landscape features like trees and gardens, and the use of signage to identify different fueling islands in the architectural design of mega filling stations. It recommends inculcating passive circulation design principles, such as designing the gas station so that cars can maneuver with ease and aid traffic flow, especially in highly populated and developed areas.
