Abstract

Millet was said to have been originated in the American continent probably in Gantamala or Mexico. It was first brought to Portugal and Spain and then other African countries. The Portuguese then introduced into India and Asia. Major world producing countries are united States which produces about half of the total world production (250 metric tones per year). This was followed by Portugal which produces about 200 metric tons per year. Major millet producing countries in African include Ghana which produces about 100 metric tons per year, Gambia and Nigeria which produces about 8O metric tone and 60 metric tons per year respectively. Other millet producing countries include USSR, Yugoslavia, Ramania, Mexico, Argentina and Hungary. It was also known as one of the main cereal staple of west Africa. The experiment was conducted at Audu Bako College of Agriculture research farm Thomas Danbatta Kano. The site of the experiment is situated between 11-1-130 latitude. 80-230 longitude with about 250C-300C, as annual mean temperature. The experiment consist of three levels of poultry manure and one variety of millet (Sosat Hybrid) with fertilizer application M0kgha-1, M20kgha and M40kgha respectively were replicated three times using randomized complete block designed (R.C.B.D). All standard Agronomic practice were done to manage the crop. Data were collected on plant height, stand count, number of leaves, Inflorescence height, and were observed and recorded. Treatment with 40kgha-1 performed better in terms of all the parameters recorded such as plant height, stand count, number of leaves, Inflorescence, height stem garth. The result of the studies indicate a significant variation in most of the parameters measured.
