SCREENING AND ISOLATION OF SPENT ENGINE OIL DEGRADING MICROBES FOR ENHANCED BIODETERGENT PRODUCTION
Oluchi Ebere Akumah · BSc · Biotechnology

ABSTRACT Spent engine oil degrading microorganisms has recently gained interest in the industrial sector for the purpose of producing biodetergent which serves as an alternative to other harmful surfactant which possess hazardous effect on humans and the environment. In this present study, an investigation was carried out on the presence of bacterial and fungal strains that have the ability to degrade spent engine oil as their main source of carbon. A total of three (3) different environmental samples were collected from three (3) different locations within Ikwo Local Government Area Ebonyi State and screened for the presence of degrading microbial species. Bacterial and fungal isolates were obtained using Mineral Salt Agar and Potatoes Dextrose Agar respectively. Isolates were further screened on Potatoes Dextrose Agar, resulting in the selection of sixteen (16) isolates based on their appearance on the culture media after incubation. Total viable counts of microorganisms in the samples ranges from 1.5× 10¹ (highest count) and 1.0 × 10¹ (lowest count) for the bacterial isolates and 2.2 ×10³ (highest count) 5.6× 10² (lowest count) for the fungal isolates. The ability of these isolates to degrade spent engine oil was determined using the gravimetric analysis method. From the morphological and biochemical tests taken, it was suspected that the bacterial isolate ( SA1, SA2, SB4 and SC3) as Bacillus sp.,(SA3, SB1, SC4) as Escherichia coli sp., (SA4) as Klebsiella sp., (SB2, SC2) as Staphylococcus sp., and (SB3 and SC1) as Pseudomonas sp.,while the fungal isolates (SA5, SA6, SB5, SB6) were suspected Aspergillus sp., and (SC6) Rhizopus sp. Isolated microorganisms can further be cultivated in a bioreactor to produce enyme which is purified, lyophilized and introduced during the manufacturing of biodetergents, which can help reduce the environmental and human health issues that have been induced by chemically used laundry detergent. Ayobami James Alabi · BTech · Cyber Security

The rapid evolution of cyber threats has heightened the need for robust Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions capable of effective detection and response. This study performs a comparative analysis of three open-source SIEM platforms; Wazuh, Graylog, and the ELK Stack focusing on their capabilities in detecting and responding to simulated cyber-attacks, including brute force, data exfiltration, malware infection, port scanning, and SQL injection. Each platform was deployed in a controlled environment, and attack simulations were conducted to generate realistic threat scenarios. Key metrics, such as detection accuracy, false positives, resource utilization, and system efficiency, were employed to evaluate performance. The results reveal that Wazuh demonstrated superior compliance and regulatory capabilities, excelling in anomaly detection with fewer false positives. Graylog offered unparalleled ease of integration and real-time log management, effectively detecting threats through its centralized dashboard. The ELK Stack exhibited exceptional capacity to handle large volumes of data logs and provided detailed visualization and analysis tools. This analysis highlights the distinct strengths and limitations of each SIEM platform. Wazuh is recommended for organizations prioritizing compliance and advanced anomaly detection, Graylog for those requiring efficient log management and user-friendly interfaces, and the ELK Stack for enterprises focusing on comprehensive data processing and insightful analytics. This research provides actionable insights for organizations to select a SIEM solution tailored to their specific cyber security requirements, fostering enhanced threat detection and incident response mechanisms.

IMPACT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON TAX ADMINISTRATION IN NIGERIA
Oluwatise Rachael Olushina · BSc · Accounting

ABSTRACT This study investigates the impact of information technology (IT) on tax administration in Nigeria, focusing on its influence on efficiency, transparency, and tax compliance. IT adoption is expected to improve tax processes, but challenges like technological advancements, digital literacy, and system inefficiencies remain obstacles. The research aims to assess the improvements in tax administration due to IT, its role in expanding the tax base, and whether inefficiencies contribute to tax evasion. A survey of 50 respondents with diverse demographics was conducted, and Chi-Square analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Findings show that the hypothesis that IT-based tax administration positively affects tax generation and expands the tax base was accepted with a Chi-Square score of X² = 15.67, p < 0.05. The majority of respondents (76%) agreed that IT has improved tax processes, especially in filing, payment, and record management, while 80% noted increased efficiency, including reduced processing times and enhanced accuracy. The hypothesis that inefficiencies contribute to tax evasion was also accepted, with 70% of respondents identifying issues like inaccurate records and delays, supported by a Chi-Square score of X² = 13.42, p < 0.05. Despite improvements, challenges such as rapid technological changes, digital disparities, stakeholder resistance, and concerns about data privacy and cybersecurity persist, necessitating a strong regulatory framework. The study concludes that IT adoption has enhanced tax administration and expanded the tax base, but continued investment in IT infrastructure, better data security, taxpayer education, and efforts to mitigate stakeholder resistance are recommended to maximize IT’s potential in boosting tax compliance and revenue mobilization in Nigeria.
