ProjectEkiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-20821231763999115CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, FUNCTIONAL AND PASTING PROPERTIES OF NATIVE AND ACETYLATED POTATO STARCHPelumi David Makinde · BSc · ChemistryABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of acetylation on the proximate composition, functional, and

pasting properties of Irish potato starch. Native and acetylated starches were analyzed to determine

how chemical modification influences their physicochemical behavior and potential industrial

applications. The proximate composition results revealed that acetylation caused a slight reduction

in fat content (0.93% to 0.63%), ash content (0.67% to 0.45%), protein content (1.82% to 0.83%),

and crude fiber (0.54% to 0.48%), indicating partial removal of non-starch components.

Conversely, carbohydrate content increased from 85.84% in NTPS to 87.5 1% in acetylated potato

starch, suggesting enhanced starch purity. Acetylation also introduced 1.204% acetyl groups with

a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.046, confirming successful modification. Functional properties

showed notable differences between native and acetylated potato starch. Water absorption capacity

increased from 140% to 145%, indicating improved hydration ability. However, oil absorption

capacity slightly decreased from 105% to 100%, suggesting reduced lipid-binding capacity. A

Significant reduction in least gelation concentration (from 8.0% to 4.0%) was observed,

highlighting improved gel-forming ability. Paste clarity remained similar, suggesting that

acetylation did not significantly impact transparency. Pasting properties indicated that acetylation

influenced viscosity behavior. Peak viscosity decreased from 1001 RVU to 945 RVU, suggesting

lower swelling power. Trough viscosity also reduced from 521 RVU to 417 RVU, indicating

weaker gel stability under shear. Breakdown viscosity increased from 480 RVU to 528 RVU,

signifying lower paste stability under heat. Meanwhile, final viscosity dropped from 564 RVU to

493 RVU, demonstrating reduced gelling ability upon cooling. Pasting temperature slightly

decreased from 76.0°C to 75.1°C, suggesting lower gelatinization energy requirements. Overall,

acetylation improved hydration and gelation properties but reduced viscosity and paste stability.

These modifications enhance the applicability of acetylated Irish potato starch in food processing

pharmaceuticals, and industrial formulations requiring controlled thickening, moisture retention,

and reduced retrogradation.

ProjectAuchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-5049210831763998975PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDIES AND GC-MS ANALYSIS OF PHYLANTHUS NIRURIRaphael Shegun Emmanuel · HND · CHEMISTRYMedicinal plants have remained a major source of therapeutic agents across cultures and civilizations. Their healing properties are attributed to naturally occurring chemical constituents known as phytochemicals, which include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, saponins, glycosides, and phenolic compounds (Ahmad et al., 2013). These phytochemicals exhibit a wide range of biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and antidiabetic effects.
Phyllanthus niruri, commonly referred to as “stone breaker,” is a well-recognized medicinal plant widely used in Africa, Asia, and South America. It is traditionally employed for treating malaria, jaundice, kidney stones, liver disorders, diabetes, and microbial infections (Mohammed et al., 2013). The rich medicinal reputation of P. niruri has fueled scientific interest in determining the chemical basis of its therapeutic value. The presence of flavonoids, phenols, tannins, and terpenoids in Phyllanthus niruri corresponds with its reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. These compounds are known to scavenge free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory pathways, which support the traditional medicinal use of the plant in treating liver disorders, infections, and inflammatory conditions.
The GC–MS analysis further identified a variety of bioactive compounds that align with those documented in Silva et al. (2015), confirming the chemical consistency of P. niruri across different studies. Fatty acids such as palmitic acid contribute to the antimicrobial potential of the plant by disrupting microbial cell membranes, while phytol exhibits anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antioxidant activities. Additionally, compounds such as hexadecanoic acid methyl ester and other esters detected in the GC–MS profile are associated with anti-cancer, antimicrobial, and analgesic effects, highlighting the plant’s broad therapeutic potential.
Terpenoids detected in the study are known to possess antiviral, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties, while phenolic compounds contribute to both antioxidant activity and the prevention of oxidative stress-related diseases. The synergistic effect of these phytochemicals may explain the multi-targeted pharmacological actions of P. niruri, validating its use in traditional medicine and supporting its potential application in modern drug development and nutraceutical formulations.
Overall, the phytochemical composition and GC–MS profile suggest that Phyllanthus niruri is a promising source of natural bioactive compounds with diverse therapeutic properties, warranting further pharmacological and clinical investigations to explore its full medicinal potential.

ProjectUniversity of Ilorin, Kwara State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-50528331763998417IMPACT OF SIDE HUSTLES ON THE ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION OF UNDERGRADUATES IN KWARA STATEKehinde Miracle Ojurongbe · BEd · Social science EducationABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of side hustles on the academic concentration of undergraduates in Kwara State, Nigeria. As economic challenges persist and the desire for financial independence rises, many students have turned to side hustles—income-generating activities undertaken alongside formal education. This research investigates how these ventures influence students’ ability to focus on academic tasks, and whether the effects vary by gender or academic level.

A descriptive survey design was used, involving 231 randomly selected undergraduates from the University of Ilorin. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire (ISHACU-Q) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. Results showed that 83.98% of respondents engage in side hustles, with the most common activities being delivery services, fashion design, online trading, tutoring, and digital freelancing.

Findings indicate that the majority of students exhibit average (55.84%) or high (35.93%) levels of academic concentration, while only 8.23% fall into the low concentration category. Students generally agreed that side hustles help improve discipline, provide financial relief, and enhance time management. However, they also acknowledged that side hustles can lead to stress and reduced study time. Despite these challenges, most students disagreed with statements suggesting that side hustles cause them to skip lectures or fail to prepare for exams.

Statistical tests revealed no significant differences in the impact of side hustles on academic concentration based on gender (p = 0.1796) or academic level (p = 0.8560). This suggests that the influence of side hustles is relatively consistent across all student groups.

The study concludes that while side hustles present both opportunities and challenges, students are largely capable of managing them without significantly compromising academic focus. It recommends institutional support such as entrepreneurship programs, flexible learning schedules, and wellness services to help students balance academic and economic demands effectively.

ProjectEkiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-501361331763998277IMPACT OF MONETARY POLICY ON AGRICULTURAL FINANCING BY DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIAGodwin Ogewu Ode · BSc · FinanceThis study delved into the impact of monetary policy on agricultural financing by deposit money banks in Nigeria. To achieve these objectives, the study employed an ex-post facto research design and secondary annual time series data streaming from 2003 to 2023 and obtained from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin. On the same vein, dependent variable of agricultural financing was proxied by credit concentration to agricultural sector, while, the independent variable of monetary policy was proxied by monetary policy rate, money supply, liquidity ratio and cash reserve ratio. Analytically, the staionarity test through Phillips-Perron unit root test revealed that the order of integration for variables included in the model was a mixture of I(0) and I(1). Therefore, the study employed the bound testing approach and error correction model within the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) framework to explore the long-run and short-run effect of interest and inflation rate on economic development of Nigeria. Evidence of no long run relationship was found among the dependent variables and independent variables through the estimation of ARDL bound test of co-integration. Additionally, the ARDL result revealed that monetary policy rate exerts a positive but insignificant impact on agricultural financing by deposit money banks in the short run; money supply exerts a negative and insignificant effect on agricultural financing in Nigeria in the short run; there is a positive but insignificant relationship between liquidity ratio and agricultural financing by deposit money banks in the short run and there is a negative and insignificant correlation between cash reserve ratio and agricultural financing in Nigeria in the short run. Premise on these discoveries, the study concluded that monetary policy has an insignificant impact on agricultural financing by deposit money banks in Nigeria in the short run. Thereby, the study recommended that monetary authorities should ensure that special consideration is given to agricultural sector during formulation of their policies that guides the activities of deposit money banks in Nigeria; money in circulation should be adequately dispatched to the real sector without any discrimination through the deposit money banks and proper implementation of the monetary policy in Nigeria; the part of the aggregate deposit received by deposit money banks that is expected to be set aside for reserve as mandated by the monetary authorities should be considerate enough so as to enhance the financing of the agricultural sector in Nigeria and further studies should be extended to cover the agricultural financing by all the deposit money banks in Nigeria.
