ASSESSMENT OF FAUNA FUNTIONAL BIODIVERSITY IN POST HYDROCARBON REMEDIATED SOIL ECOSYSTEM
Victory Chukwuekwu · BSc · Animal and Environmental Biology

This study investigates the functional biodiversity of soil fauna in post-hydrocarbon remediated
ecosystems, focusing on the recovery of species richness, abundance, and functional roles of
soil microarthropods. The aim was to evaluate the impact of hydrocarbon pollution on soil
fauna and recovery potential of a nutrient amendment bioremediation technique in enhancing
soil fauna diversity and ecosystem function. The research was conducted across four sites,
divided into two sections: Site A (remediated 2 months and 4 months prior to the
commencement of the study), Site B (remediated 6 months and 4 years prior to the
commencement of the study), Site C (polluted site), and Site D (unpolluted site used as control).
Soil samples were collected using an 8.5 cm bucket-type auger from two depth ranges (0-10
cm and 10-20 cm), extracted with modified Burkard model Berlese-Tullgren funnels, and
analysed for species richness, abundance, and functional diversity. The findings revealed that
Site D (control) had the highest species richness, abundance, and functional diversity, followed
by Site B (long-term remediated site). Site A (short-term remediated site), showed lower
species richness, abundance, and functional diversity, while Site C (polluted site), exhibited
the lowest species richness, abundance, and functional diversity. The study recorded four
functional groups with Site B showing the highest diversity, indicating that hydrocarbon
pollution negatively impacts soil fauna populations and their ecosystem services. The results
also suggest that the nutrient amendment remediation technique is effective in restoring soil
fauna populations and the ecosystem services they provide after a long-term remediation.

THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS ORGANISATIONS ON THE CONDUCT OF 2023 KADUNA STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION IN SABON-GARI LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Abdullahi Dalhatu · BSc · Political Science

the conduct of elections in Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna State, has been a subject of interest to many stakeholders. This study examines the role of religious organizations in the conduct of the Kaduna State governorship election in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The study seeks to investigate the extent to which religious organizations influenced the electoral process, voter turnout, and the overall outcome of the election. The study employed a survey research design, with a sample size of 400 respondents selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that religious organizations played a significant role in promoting peaceful coexistence, voter education, and mobilization during the election. However, the study also found that some religious organizations were accused of bias and partisan politics, which had a negative impact on the electoral process. The study recommends that religious organizations should maintain neutrality and focus on promoting peaceful coexistence and voter education, rather than engaging in partisan politics. The study also suggests that the electoral commission should engage religious organizations in its activities to promote transparency and accountability.

GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND NUTRIENT UTILIZATION OF NILE TILAPIA (OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS) JUVENILES FED DUCKWEED-ENRICHED FEED
Esosa Dannybell Samson · BSc · Fisheries

The present study evaluates the impact of duckweed (lemna minor) on the growth performance and nutrient utilization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) juveniles with initial weight of 4.00g and 6.00cm length were allocated into fifteen tanks with a density of 20 fish per tank. Fish were fed five experimental diets containing 20%, 15%, 10%, 5% and 0%(control) duckweed inclusion for 8 weeks. The result after 8 weeks showed that fish fed with 15% duckweed inclusion had better value for growth parameters; had the highest weight gain of (9.90+0.28), specific growth rate of (1.97+0.00) but the lowest FCR of (1.21+0.00). Fish fed 5% duckweed inclusion contrarily had the least weight gain of (5.73+0.33), specific growth rate of (1.43+0.00) but highest FCR of (2.10+0.00).The feed intake was not significantly different across the five treatments (P>0.05).The carcass weight of the experimental fish showed that there was a significant difference (P0.05) recorded between the means. This study implied that inclusion of duckweed at 15% has a positive effect on Oreochromis niloticus juveniles.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF SELECTED FRUITS
    Omolara Comfort Oyetunde · HND · BIOLOGY/MICROBIOLOGY

    ABSTRACT
This study investigated the isolation and identification of microbial organisms present in fruits
that are commonly sold in three different markets within Ibadan metropolis. A total of 54
different fruit samples of cococnut, apple, and pineapple sops were purchased from Oje Itameria
market, Ibadan, Oyo State. All samples were analyzed for the density of microorganisms present
using standard plate count method. The frequency of occurrence of the different types of
microbials present on the fruit samples were also determined using standard microbiological
methods. The composition of nutrient in each fruit sample was also analyzed using standard
method. The results of the study showed that the microbial loads of all the fruits examined
ranged between n 1.0 x 105 ± 0.60 x to 3.36 x103 and the differences were found to be significant
(P < 0.05). The species of microorganisms isolated from the fruit samples were Bacillus,
Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella. Of the 81(100
%) total isolates of bacteria the most frequently isolated species were Staphylococcus (35.8 %)
followed by Bacillus, Streptococcus and Escherichia coli (29.2, 16,0 and 9.9 %) while the least
frequently isolated species were Pseudomonas (6.2 %) and Salmonella (2.6 %).
The results revealed significant variations in microbial load between fruit types and sources.
Fruits with textured or porous surfaces, such as strawberries and cantaloupes, exhibited higher
microbial counts compared to smoother-surfaced fruits like apples and grapes. Common
contaminants identified included Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and molds such as
Aspergillus and Penicillium. The findings underscore the influence of handling, storage
conditions, and surface morphology on microbial contamination.
This study highlights the necessity for improved post-harvest handling practices, proper washing,
and storage techniques to ensure fruit safety and minimize health risks. Furthermore,
comparative microbiological analyses can guide consumers and regulatory bodies in implementing measures to enhance the quality and safety of fresh produce.
