ProjectAmbrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-168565731761325042EVALUATION OF THE SUBCHORIONIC EFFECT OF AQUEOUS LEAF EXTRACT OF PSIDIUM GUAJAVA ON THE LIVER OF ADULT WISTAR RATS.Bukola Ruth Adesida · BSc · AnatomyABSTRACT Psidium guajava leaves has been used traditionally in the management of different ailments. Yet, there is paucity of information on the toxic effects. The present study is aimed to Evaluation of the subchronic effect of aqueous leaf extract of Psidium guajava on the liver of adult Wistar rats. In this study, the leaves of Psidium guajava were gotten from a farmland in Ekpoma, authenticated, chopped into pieces, sundried, grinded into fine powder and mixed with water produce a gel-like extract. Sixteen (16) adult Wistar rats were randomly assigned into four groups i.e. group A (Control), group B (Low dose treatment), group C (Medium dose treatment) and group D (High dose treatment), each containing four rats (n= 4/group). The animals in group A served as control while animals in Group B, C and D were treated with 150mg/kg, 300mg/kg and 500mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Psidium guajava respectively. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed under chloroform anesthesia. The liver was excised, weighed and fixed in formalin for tissue processing. There was a significant increase (p< 0.05) in the final body weight of the treated group when compared with the control group, particularly in the low and high dose groups. The comparison between the weight of liver was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). The absence of liver damage, coupled with the observed weight gain, supports the safety profile of Psidium guajava as a potentially beneficial herbal remedy without causing toxicity or organ harm. Future studies should explore the underlying mechanisms behind these effects and investigate the long-term safety and efficacy of the extract for therapeutic use.

ProjectAdamawa State University, Mubi, Adamawa State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-285795931761324846EVALUATION OF SOAKED SICKLE POD(SENNA OBTUSIFOLIA)SEED MEAL ON GROWTH RESPONSE OF AFRICAN CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS,BURCHELL 1822.)FINGERLINGFaith Salami · BA · Fisheries and AquacultureThis study evaluated the potential of soaked sickle pod (Senna obtusifolia) seed meal (SSOSM) as a partial replacement for soybean in the diet of African catfish (C.gariepinus). Four experimental diets were formulated with SSOSM inclusion levels of 0% (control), 10%,20%, and 30%, and their effects on growth response, feed utilization, survival, and cost-effectiveness were assessed over a 60-day feeding trial. Results indicated that the inclusion of 10%6 SSOSM in the diet supported growth response comparable to that control, with significant improvements in feed conversion ratio (1.49) and protein efficiency ratio (0.24).However,higher inclusion levels (20-30%) led to reduced growth metrics, likely due to residual anti-nutritionalfactors (tannins: 2.25%;phytates: 1.56%) despite the meal's moderate crude protein content (24.18%). Notably, survival rates were highest in the 30% SSOSM group (73.30%), suggesting potential health benefits unrelated to growth. Economically, the 10% SSOSM diet offered a favorable cost-benefit ratio (2.2006E3), making it a viable alternative to soybean. The study concludes that SSOSM can be effectively incorporated at 10% inclusion to reduce feed costs without compromising growth, while higher levels require further processing to mitigate anti-nutritional effects. These findings contribute to sustainable aquaculture practices by promoting locally sourced, cost-effective feed ingredients for African catfish production
