THE EFFECT OF ORGANIZATIONAL RETRENCHMENT POLICY ON EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY (A CASE STUDY OF ACCESS BANK PLC, ILORIN, KWARA STATE)
Emmanuel Adekunle Alaba · BSc · Business Administration

ABSTRACT This study comprehensively investigates the effect of organizational retrenchment policies on employee productivity in Access Bank Plc, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. In the context of increasing economic pressures, digital transformation, and regulatory reforms, retrenchment practices such as labor casualization, outsourcing, and technological automation have emerged as dominant strategies in the Nigerian banking sector. While these policies are intended to optimize operational efficiency and reduce costs, their impact on workforce performance, specifically in terms of employee commitment, engagement, and efficiency, remains a subject of ongoing debate and limited empirical evidence, particularly at the branch level. Grounded in the Organizational Justice Theory and the Resource-Based View (RBV), this study adopts a descriptive survey design and collects data from 115 valid respondents across five strategically selected Access Bank branches in Ilorin metropolis. The data were analyzed using multiple regression to examine the structural, psychological, and operational consequences of retrenchment policies on remaining employees. The findings revealed that labor casualization had a statistically significant impact on employee commitment, explaining 52.1% of the variation. Outsourcing practices contributed 57.1% to employee engagement, and technological automation had the most pronounced effect, accounting for 74.1% of the variance in employee efficiency. While these strategies can enhance workforce agility and productivity when properly implemented, the study also identified concerns such as reduced morale, unclear roles, and adaptation challenges. The research concludes that although retrenchment can serve as a strategic tool for organizational sustainability, its success hinges on transparent communication, ethical implementation, and employee support systems. This study offers valuable insights for human resource professionals and bank administrators, emphasizing the need to balance cost-reduction objectives with employee-centered approaches to ensure sustainable productivity in Nigeria’s evolving banking landscape.

Precious Ekong Peter · BEd · Political science education

This study was carried out to determine the relationship between social studies teachers motivation and job performance in secondary schools in North East Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom state. Four research questions and four null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The Correlational research design was used for the study. The population of the study consisted of all the 168 Social studies teachers in the 87 public secondary schools in North East Senatorial District. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting 25 Social studies teachers each from four randomly selected schools. This gave a total of 118 Social studies teachers selected for the study. Data was collected using a researcher developed two instruments named, Motivation Questionnaire (MQ) and Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (TJPQ). It was further subjected to face validity by three experts. The reliability coefficients of MQ and TJPQ were 0.81 and 0.76 respectively determined using Cronbach Alpha Reliability statistics. Data analysis was done using Pearson product moment correlation (PPMC) statistics. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between recognition, incentives, promotion and professional development and social studies teachers job performance in North East Senatorial District. Recommendations were made among others that Government should make sure they promote teachers in schools for effective job performance.

PROPHYLACTIC POTENTIAL OF GARCINIA KOLA LEAVE EXTRACT AUGMENTED WITH VITAMIN C AGAINST NEWCASTLE DISEASE VIRUS INFECTION USING EMBRYONATED CHICKEN EGGS
Esther Amarachi Okoli · BSc · Microbiology

The global cases of Newcastle disease among poultry farming in Nigeria has severely encroached the economic standard of poultry farmers. This study was undertaken in order to assess the activity of Garcinia kola leaves extract augmented with against Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV). The phytochemical constituent of ethanolic extract of the plant was determined quantitatively using spectrophotometric and gravimetric methods. The activity of the extract and mixture against NDV was determined using in vivo technique in embryonated chicken eggs. The photochemical constituents of the plant extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, saponins and glycosides. There was decreased in egg weights from 63.18g to 44.12 and embryonic weights from 4.75g to 3.86g of the infected eggs after 72h and these were significantly (P < 0.05) increased in these eggs protected with the extract of which the mixture of the Garcinia kola vitamin C recorded the highest weight. There was also significant (P< 0.05) reduction in infectivity of NDV as the embryo – egg weight ratio (EE) and neutralization values increased among the protected eggs. Therefore Garcinia kola leaves extract mixed with vitamin C exhibited protective activity against NDV and the activity was most pronounced when compared to the individual extract.

ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF ENDOPHYTIC AND SPOILAGE FUNGI ASSOCIATED WITH FRESH GREEN PEPPER SOLD IN GWAGWALADA MARKET ABUJA
    Ni’imat Suleiman Mahamud · BSc · Microbiology

This study aimed to isolate and identify endophytic and spoilage fungi associated with fresh green peppers (Capsicum annuum) sold in Gwagwalada Market, Abuja. A total of 30 Fresh green peppers (Capsicum annuum) were purchased from random sellers in Gwagwalada market. Fresh and spoilt green pepper samples were determined by the organoleptic characteristics of the samples which include odour, colour and taste. The fragmentation method was employed for fungal isolation, and the identification of fungal species was performed using macroscopic and microscopic observations, with lactophenol cotton blue staining. Two (2) endophytic fungal species, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp., and 3 spoilage fungal species Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Mucor sp. were isolated from the pepper samples. Among the isolates, Aspergillus niger was the most frequently occurring endophytic fungus (58.3%) and Penicillium sp. the least (41.7%). The most prevalent spoilage fungus was Aspergillus flavus (50.0%), Aspergillus niger (31.25%) and Mucor sp. (18.75%) was the least occurring spoilage fungus. This study highlights the fungal diversity in green peppers from Gwagwalada Market, emphasizing the predominance of Aspergillus niger as a potential concern for food safety.
