EFFECT OF TRUANCY TENDENCIES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PUPILS WITH MILD INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY IN IBADAN NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OYO STATE
Oluwadamilola Omowunmi Ayodele · BEd · Special Education/Mathematics

Truancy remains a pressing challenge in the education of pupils with mild intellectual disabilities, significantly hampering their academic performance and overall development. This study examined the contributing factors to truancy, its effects on academic outcomes, teacher perceptions, and viable interventions, using pupils in Ibadan North Local Government Area as the focus. The objectives included identifying the causes of truancy, assessing its impact on academic performance, and exploring strategies to mitigate it. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from 30 respondents through a structured questionnaire comprising 20 items. The analysis utilized mean, standard deviation, and chi-square statistical tools. The results revealed that factors such as family instability, lack of parental supervision, peer influence, inadequate school support, and teacher inefficiency significantly contribute to truancy (χ² = 18.75, p < 0.05). Respondents strongly agreed that truancy leads to poor grades, reduced classroom participation, and higher dropout risks for pupils with mild intellectual disabilities. Teachers identified truancy as a major obstacle to academic success, attributing it to insufficient parental engagement and the challenges of managing frequently absent pupils. The study further highlighted interventions such as increased parental involvement, provision of counselling services, and implementation of individualized learning plans as essential in combating truancy. The findings emphasize the need for schools to create a supportive environment tailored to the unique needs of these pupils. For example, specialized support programs and collaboration between schools, parents, and communities were identified as key measures to encourage regular classroom attendance of pupils with mild intellectual disability.

REMOVAL OF CHROMIUM FROM SIMULATED WASTEWATER USING PERIWINKLE SHELL ACTIVATED CARBON
Uduakobong Umana Itaketo · BEng · Chemical Engineering

Chromium adsorption from wastewater onto periwinkle shell activated carbon was studied using

batch experiments. Periwinkle shell samples were prepared, pyrolysed at 700°C, activated with

nitric acid and characterized to determine its physiochemical properties. Batch adsorption

experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of process parameters (contact time,

adsorbent dosage and initial metal ion concentration) on adsorption rate. Adsorption kinetics was

tested using pseudo first and second order models. Adsorption Isotherms were analyzed using the

Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Results showed that adsorption rate increased with

increase in contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial metal ion concentration. Batch adsorption

Kinetics experiments gave a Correlation coefficient value (R2 ) of 0.9337 and 0.9931 for the pseudo

First and Second order kinetic models respectively. This revealed that the mechanism of adsorption

followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model; this indicated that the adsorption process of

chromium (III) ions onto periwinkle shell activated carbon was controlled by chemisorption

mechanism. Adsorption Isotherm data showed a Correlation coefficient value (R2 ) of 0.987 and

0.8295 for Langmuir and Freundlich Isotherms respectively. This showed that the Langmuir

isotherm accurately described the adsorption data indicating that the adsorption process was mainly

monolayer on a homogeneous adsorbent surface. A model was developed for the adsorption process

and validated by plotting the percentage removal obtained from experiments against the predicted

values of the model. Results showed that the Correlation coefficient value (R2 ) was found to be

0.9998 which indicated a good fit and a valid model representation of the adsorption model
