ProjectJoseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State · 2026 · NDN PRJ-7796220931767816057IMPACT OF INDUSTRIAL WASTE ON ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH IN NIGERIA: LEGAL FRAMEWORK AND SOLUTIONSInioluwa Dorcas Adeyemo · LL.B · LawThis project examines the multifaceted impacts of industrial waste on environmental health in Nigeria, alongside an analysis of the existing legal framework and proposed solutions. Nigeria's rapid industrialization, particularly in sectors such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and mining, has led to significant economic growth but concurrently generated vast quantities of often toxic industrial waste. The improper disposal of these wastes has resulted in severe environmental degradation, including widespread air, water, and soil pollution, notably evident in oil spills in the Niger Delta. These environmental challenges pose critical public health risks, contributing to a high prevalence of diseases such as cancer, respiratory disorders, and gastrointestinal infections, thereby violating fundamental human rights, including the rights to life and health. The study evaluates Nigeria's legal and regulatory landscape for industrial waste management, which includes the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency(NESREA) Act (2007), the Harmful Waste (Special Criminal Provisions) Act (1988), and adherence to international agreements like the Basel Convention. Despite these frameworks, the project identifies significant challenges in their effective implementation, largely due to weak institutional frameworks, inadequate funding, limited public participation, and issues of corruption. The findings highlight the urgent need for a robust and multi-faceted approach.Recommendations include strengthening environmental regulations and their enforcement, investing in modern waste management infrastructure, promoting cleaner industrial technologies, enhancing public awareness, and ensuring legislative reforms to improve accountability. This research aims to contribute valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and industries, fostering sustainable practices and safeguarding environmental health in Nigeria.

This study assesses the microbial safety, phytochemical composition, and antibiotic resistance profiles of bacterial isolates from tiger nuts sold in Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State. Tiger nut samples were collected from vendors in Owode markets. Microbiological analysis involved serial dilution and plating on Nutrient Agar, MacConkey Agar, Mannitol Salt Agar, Eosin Methylene Blue Agar, and Potato Dextrose Agar to isolate bacteria and fungi. Isolates were characterized using Gram staining and biochemical tests, with antibiotic susceptibility tested via the disc diffusion method. Phytochemical screening employed qualitative and quantitative tests, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify bioactive compounds. Microbial loads ranged from 1.2 × 10² to 7.5 × 10⁴ CFU/g, with 28 bacterial isolates identified, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp., and Pseudomonas spp., and five fungal isolates (Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp.). Most bacterial isolates exhibited resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., Ampiclox, Cefuroxime) but were susceptible to Ofloxacin and Gentamycin. Phytochemical analysis confirmed phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, with FTIR identifying hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, and GC-MS detecting compounds like n-hexadecanoic acid and oleic acid. Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron were present, supporting nutritional value.
