THE EFFECTS OF NIGERIA BORDER CLOSURE ON REGIONAL TRADE IN WEST AFRICA
Patrick Julius Blessing · BSc · BSc political science

The study examined the effects of Nigeria’s border closure on regional trade within West Africa between 2019 and 2022. The study was guided by the following objectives: to examine the causes of border closure in Nigeria from 2019 to 2022, to examine regional trade in West Africa from 2019 to 2022, and to examine the effects of Nigeria’s border closure on regional trade in West Africa within the same period. The study adopted a qualitative research design, relying on secondary data obtained from scholarly articles, government reports, newspapers, trade bulletins, and ECOWAS publications. The study was anchored on the Economic Integration Theory, which emphasizes the removal of trade barriers and increased interdependence among states to promote economic development and stability. The findings revealed that the major causes of the border closure included the government’s intention to curb rampant smuggling of goods such as rice and petroleum products, protect local agriculture and manufacturing industries, reduce the influx of contraband, and address security challenges arising from porous borders. The study also found that regional trade was significantly disrupted, with formal trade declining by approximately 12%, while informal trade persisted through unofficial and riskier routes, undermining the goals of economic integration under ECOWAS protocols. Additionally, the study indicated that the closure led to increased prices of food and essential commodities in Nigeria and neighboring states, loss of income for small-scale traders and border communities, deterioration of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and countries such as Benin and Niger, and weakening of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme, thereby exposing the conflict between national protectionist measures and regional trade cooperation principles. Based on these findings, the study recommended strengthening regional dialogue and collaboration among ECOWAS member states, modernizing border management systems, improving customs cooperation, promoting inclusive trade policies, and ensuring that national security measures align with regional economic integration objectives to avoid similar disruptions in the future.

IMPACT OF DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY ON EMPLOYEE PERFORAMNCE IN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY (A CASE STUDY OF TUYIL PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY, ILORIN)
Samson Oluwashola Oseni · HND · Business Administration

    In contemporary business
management, delegation stands as a vital practice
that
contributes to a variety of organizational benefits.
According to Al-Jammal, Al-Khasawneh, and
Hamadat, (2015), delegation is a function that not only increases the productivity
of employees
but
also fosters greater levels of cooperation, trust, and communication between
managers and
subordinates. Delegation allows managers to focus on more strategic aspects of the business,
as it
alleviates the functional burdens
of decision-making and task management that would otherwise
detract from higher-level responsibilities. Moreover, it contributes to achieving positive
outcomes
for both
employees and the organization as a whole. By delegating authority and responsibility,
managers empower employees, leading to enhanced job
satisfaction and motivation. When
employees feel entrusted with meaningful tasks, they are more likely to take ownership of their
roles, leading to better
performance
outcomes. In essence, delegation helps reduce the physical
and intellectual strain on both
managers and employees, thereby streamlining workflows and
improving organizational efficiency (Al-Jammal et al., 2015).

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF HEAVY METALS ON SPINACH AND WATER LEAVES FROM ABOBO, OSARA AND OBAJANA COMMUNITY
Maryam Yahya · BSc · Biochemistry

This study focuses on the comparative analysis of heavy metal contamination in spinach

(Spinacia oleracea) and water leaf samples collected from Abobo, Osara, and Obajana

in Kogi State, Nigeria. The regions are known for their proximity to industrial activities,

including cement production, which potentially contributes to environmental pollution.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the concentration of heavy metals such as lead (Pb),

cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) in both spinach and water leaf samples,

and to compare the contamination levels between the different locations. Samples were

collected from the three areas, processed, and analyzed using Atomic Absorption

Spectrophotometry (AAS) after standard acid digestion. The results indicate significant

variations in heavy metal concentrations, with Obajana showing the highest levels of

contamination in both spinach and water leaf samples, likely due to its proximity to the

cement factory. Some metal concentrations exceeded the World Health Organization

(WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) permissible limits for food and

drinking water, indicating potential health risks. This study underscores the importance

of environmental monitoring and the need for stricter pollution control measures in

industrial areas to safeguard public health.

LIQUIDITY MANAGEMENT AND THE PROFITABILITY OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA
Segun Ogunlade · HND · ACCOUNTING

    ABSTRACT
This research work examined the trade-off between liquidity and profitability in the Nigerian banks. The research effort examined 10 deposit money banks in Nigeria, using a panel data of between 2010 and 2022. Return on Assets (ROA) was used as proxy for banks profitability, while the liquidity indicators used were Current Ratio (current assets to current liabilities), Cash to total asset (CTA), Cash to total deposit ratio (CTD), Liquid asset to total assets (LATA) and Loan to total deposit (LTD). The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) technique was used for the estimation. The result showed that there is a statistically significant and positive relationship between cash to total asset (CTA) and Profitability (ROA) and liquid asset to total assets (LATA) with profitability, while the result also showed that a negative, but statistically significant relationship exit between cash to total deposit (CTD) and ROA. It was also disclosed that there exist a positive, but statistically non-significant relationship between Current Ratio and Loan to Total Deposit (LTD) ratio with profitability (ROA). The researchers recommended that since the survival of deposit money banks depend on effective and efficient management of liquidity, the banks do not have to totally concentrate their efforts on maximizing profit, but also emphasize on measures that could result in liquidity management efficiency.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND PROFITABILITY OF LISTED FOOD AND BEVERAGES FIRMS IN NIGERIA
Toyosi Hannah Daniel · BSc · Accounting

    ABSTRACT
Corporate governance plays a critical role in shaping the financial performance of food
and beverages firms. However, the Nigerian food and beverages firms has faced significant
challenges due to weak governance structures that have been linked to poor financial
performance. This study therefore examined the impact of corporate governance on
profitability of listed food and beverages firms in Nigeria. The study adopted an ex-post
facto research design, ensuring a grounded real-world data from 10 listed food and
beverages firms on the Nigerian Exchange Group over a period of 10 years (2014-2023).
The study focused on corporate governance variables such as board size, board
independence, audit committee size, Board gender diversity and financial performance
variable measured as Return on Assets (ROA). Collected data were analyzed using multiple
regression analysis to determine the relationship between corporate governance variables
and profitability. The result revealed that board independence, audit committee size and
board gender diversity had positive significant statistical influence on profitability, while
the board size revealed a positive insignificant relationship with profitability. This findings
suggests that board size alone does not significantly contribute to firm profitability,
possibly due to the trade-offs between the benefits of diverse expertise and potential
coordination challenges in larger boards. The study concluded that certain aspects of
corporate governance significantly influence profitability among listed food and beverages
firms in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended that companies should not
neglect the importance of optimal board composition.
